Many Australians dream of retirement.  When that day comes, will you have the energy to be able to take advantage of the extra time to spend with family and loved ones?

October 1st is National Day of Older Persons, and we want to take the opportunity to go through some of our favourite tips for maintaining energy levels no matter what the day may throw at you! From sleep schedules to supplementation, there are a range of healthy options for your lifestyle.

Read on for some wholesome habits that are sure to invigorate your retirement lifestyle.

Embrace a high protein diet
Eating the right foods will deliver the best outcomes for your health.  A diet high in protein will not only leave you fuller for longer, but will also help regulate your energy levels.

Carbohydrates are still an important source of energy that our body uses – however, relying on refined and processed carbohydrates will leave you sluggish and lethargic.  Try focusing on lean proteins such as turkey, tuna or chicken, and pairing them with quinoa, chickpeas and brown rice.

The power of walking
Walking is a great way to exercise your body.  Apart from being low impact and friendly on your muscles and joints, it’s been linked to helping maintain healthy energy levels.

In a recent study that analysed the benefits of outdoor walking groups, walking was found to have wide-ranging health benefits that included reducing blood pressure, body fat, total cholesterol and risk of depression,[1] which are all helpful towards helping maintain healthy energy levels.

Sleep more!
It’s not often that you’re encouraged to sleep in, but getting 7-8 hours of quality sleep a night has been shown to positively impact our energy levels and stop inconsistent spikes during the day.

If you’re feeling grumpy or lethargic, you may want to consider if you’re getting enough sleep[2] – it could make a huge difference to your overall health and wellbeing.

Exercise… Your brain!
As one of the most complex muscles in the body, you can’t ignore the brain.  Regularly ‘exercising’ it through brain training has been shown to regulate and maintain healthy energy levels throughout the day.

Puzzles, reading and writing are all good ways to exercise your brain that fit easily into your daily schedule.  Other hobbies that involve maths or problem-solving skills are also fantastic for giving your brain the workout it deserves!

Supplementing with Ubiquinol
Ubiquinol is a naturally-occurring antioxidant that is found in our bodies.  As the active form of the CoEnzyme CoQ10, Ubiquinol could help you absorb the antioxidants that are key to supporting energy function.

If you’re looking for a CoQ10 energy boost to maintain your energy levels throughout the day, supplementing with Ubiquinol may help restore depleted energy levels and maintain your overall health[3].  Consult a healthcare practitioner to see if Ubiquinol supplementation could be a solution for you.

Always read the label. Use only as directed. If symptoms persist, consult your healthcare practitioner.
