Mitochondrial Function and Vascular Health: An Emerging Focus
May 2025Recent Article
Hypertension remains one of Australia’s most common and under-recognised health concerns.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, hypertension may affect up to one in four Australians, with approximately 74% of individuals with elevated blood pressure potentially unaware they meet the clinical threshold¹. A recent meta-analysis further highlights that Australia’s hypertension control rates lag behind those of other high-income nations, including Germany, the United States, and Canada².
As we acknowledge World Hypertension Day (17 May), we are presented with an important opportunity to shift the conversation from symptom management alone to supporting vascular health at the cellular level.
One area gaining attention in the scientific community is the relationship between mitochondrial function and endothelial health.
The vascular endothelium depends on healthy mitochondrial activity to support key physiological functions. These include the production of ATP, regulation of oxidative balance, and maintenance of vascular tone³⁻⁵.
Among the many components involved in mitochondrial energy production is Ubiquinol. Endogenously produced in the body, Ubiquinol plays a central role in the electron transport chain, supporting cellular energy generation and redox balance³⁻⁴.
In this short video, Integrative Cardiologist Dr Ross Walker explores how mitochondrial function may support endothelial performance and contribute to long-term cardiovascular health strategies. Click the image below to watch.
As emerging research continues to evolve, so too does the approach to cardiovascular support, emphasising the importance of addressing the biological systems that underpin vascular resilience.
